Petr Matuszek and Jiří Knotte: A Dialogue Between Gravity and the Joy of Life

23. 3. 2026, 7:30 pm | Libeň Castle

BUY TICKETS HERE

Accept our invitation to a concert that, in the intimate setting of the Rococo hall of Libeň Château, offers music full of emotion and unexpected turns. Baritone Petr Matuszek—one of the foremost interpreters of the Terezín composers—and the versatile pianist Jiří Knotte have prepared a program that spans from deep introspection to unrestrained joy of rhythm.

The Story of the Evening

The concert’s dramaturgy is a fascinating journey through the musical landscape of the first half of the 20th century. You will hear the fragile lyricism of Viktor Ullmann and Pavel Haas, composers who, even in the darkness of the Terezín ghetto, were able to create works filled with humanity and hope. Their music is complemented by A Tale of Longing by Josef Bohuslav Foerster, bringing a sense of Romantic dreaminess to the evening.

The second face of the evening belongs to rhythm and life. Weighty themes give way to the energy of interwar jazz and modernism. You will hear the iconic Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin in an arrangement for solo piano, as well as the unmistakable Bugatti Step by Jaroslav Ježek. This concert proves that music can be both a prayer and a celebration of life at the same time.

About the Performers

  • Petr Matuszek (baritone): A renowned opera soloist and pedagogue who has long specialized in the song repertoire of the Terezín and Jewish composers. His interpretations are sought after for their authenticity and depth, demonstrated on stages ranging from the Prague Spring Festival to Amsterdam and Berlin. Many composers write music specifically for his voice.
  • Jiří Knotte (piano): An artist with an exceptional sensitivity to diverse genres. He works as a conductor, pianist, and composer. His passion for improvisation and experience with melodrama enable him to accompany vocal parts with great sensitivity, while also delivering brilliant solo piano performances, such as the demanding Gershwin *Rhapsody*.

Libeň Château, with its Rococo interiors and history dating back to the 14th century, provides the ideal setting for this intimate recital.
