Join us beyond the boundaries of the everyday—and beyond Prague itself. In the industrial setting of the award-winning Coal Mill in Libčice nad Vltavou, a concert built on a striking contrast will unfold. Raw brick walls and towering factory windows will form the backdrop for the fragile beauty of French Impressionism and the fierce energy of Czech modernism.

The Pavel Bořkovec Quartet, joined by two distinguished guest artists, has prepared a program that grows from quartet to sextet, from delicate colors to a symphonic sound.

The Story of the Evening

The dramaturgy of the evening is a journey across styles and emotions. It begins with Maurice Ravel and his String Quartet in F Major. Rich in impressionistic color and atmosphere, the work will resonate in an entirely new way within the austere space of the mill. This will be followed by String Quartet No. 5 by Emil František Burian, a leading figure of the Czech avant-garde, whose music carries dramatic intensity and a modern expressive language.

The highlight of the evening will be the String Sextet in D Major by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. To bring this expressive and sonically rich work to life, the quartet will be expanded by an additional viola and cello. The result will be a full, almost orchestral sound that perfectly fills the acoustically generous space of the former coal mill.

About the Performers

  • Pavel Bořkovec Quartet: Since its founding in 2011, the ensemble has earned a reputation for its distinctive curatorial approach. The quartet systematically cultivates the legacy of Pavel Bořkovec (violist Matěj Kroupa is his great-grandson), while also engaging in cross-genre collaborations (for example with Monika Načeva) and contemporary music. Their performances are praised for technical precision and stylistic clarity.
  • Guest Artists: Cellist Matyáš Keller and violist Pavel Ciprys will join the quartet to form a string sextet for the evening.

Venue

The Coal Mill in Libčice nad Vltavou is an architectural landmark. Originally part of an early 20th-century screw factory complex, the building underwent a sensitive renovation by architect Patrik Hoffman, awarded the Grand Prix of Architects. Today it is a vibrant cultural space where industrial history meets contemporary art and design. The genius loci of this site guarantees that the concert will be not only a musical event, but a fully immersive experience.
